About Marissa Barrera
A Fight She Never Chose—But One She Refused to Back Down From.
In 2017, Marissa Barrera’s brother, Michael Barrera, was murdered by police. That moment didn’t just change her life—it revealed the depths of systemic corruption. Families like hers are expected to accept false narratives and stay silent. But she refused. Since then, she has dedicated her life to exposing injustice, amplifying the truth, and ensuring that families like hers are never erased from history.
Her work is rooted in investigative journalism, advocacy, digital media, and direct action. Over the years, she has uncovered police cover-ups, helped families challenge systemic failures, pushed for legislative change, and educated the public on the realities of police violence.
As the founder of Voices of Strength (2020), she has worked with impacted families nationwide, providing resources and amplifying their voices. Through Unapologetic Truth, she documents cases, analyzes systemic failures, and ensures that real stories are put into history correctly.
Marissa is also a certified personal trainer with over a decade of experience. Fitness has been a core foundation in her life, a means of resilience, and a tool for both physical and mental empowerment. She founded Mind Your Fitness to help individuals find strength in movement, balance in wellness, and the ability to reclaim their power.
Above all, Marissa is a mother. She homeschools her three sons, instilling in them awareness, integrity, and the strength to challenge injustice. Their future—and the future of all children—drives her work every day.
